World Food Day Celebration 2016

"World Food Day is a day of action against hunger."

On October 16, people around the world come together to declare their commitment to eradicate hunger. World Food Day celebrates the creation of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) on October 16, 1945 in Quebec, Canada. World Food Day was established in 1979 and has since been observed in almost every country by millions of people.
Each year, advocates come together to raise awareness and engage people in the fight to end hunger. We celebrated WORLD FOOD DAY in our Clay classes by sharing samples of our favorite foods on 10/17 and 10/20 and remember those that struggle with food insecurity. This year's clay students are making food-inspired clay bowls. These students will be invited to sell their bowls at our 2nd Annual Empty Bowls WHS Dinner & Fundraiser on March 24, 2017 at the High School from 530-8pm in the High School Cafeterias. The money raised will be donated to FOOD BANK OF THE HUDSON VALLEY in partnership with the COUNTRY KIDS FOOD PANTRY of Washingtonville

The Empty Bowl concept is simple. You make a monetary donation in exchange for a handmade bowl. Then you share a meal together of soups, stews, and desserts donated by Washingtonville community members and businesses. At the end of the evening you leave with your "empty bowl," which serves as a reminder of all those who are struggling with food insecurity.
We had a wide array of food items: German apple cake, homemade stromboli, empaƱadas, brownies, fried chicken, rice, rice crispy treats, jello, cup cakes, chips/salsa, canolis, cookies, and many other delicious treats and dishes. How blessed we are to have such a bounty to eat. Thank you to all the parents and students to who took the time to purchase and/or make food for us to share.
