UNIT 2: FANTASTICAL ANIMALS
Subtractive/Additive Sculpture
*PROJECT GOAL: Since the cave paintings of early humans, the visual depiction of animals has embodied great spiritual and cultural significance for indigenous cultures throughout the world. Inspired by animal symbolic beliefs and artwork from a variety of indigenous peoples and contemporary artists students will choose two or more animals of personal symbolic significance and create a clay sculpture of a fantastical hybrid creature. Students will explore with the paintings styles of 20th century Mexican artists and their Alebrijes, which are brightly colored Oaxacan-Mexican folk art sculptures of fantastical creatures.
