Nature Inspired Mugs: Using the coil building method or the pottery wheel students will create a ceramic mug inspired by a nature theme. For their mug theme students will be asked to reflect upon an experience in nature that is personal to them, allowing them to think deeper about their mug’s design and connection to their artwork. Students will learn to use the surface decoration techniques of underglaze painting, sgraffito, and/or mishima to add visual imagery, texture, and pattern to their mug’s surface. Students will be introduced to images and videos of contemporary coil building and pottery techniques as well as ceramic artists who work with underglaze painting, sgraffito and/or mishima.
