INTRODUCTION TO THE POTTERY WHEEL

After the Christmas break Clay Class students finished up constructing their Human Rights inspired Monuments and Memorials (photos to come soon). In mid-January I introduced the pottery wheel. We started with a PowerPoint presentation and discussion on the history of the pottery wheel, which believe or not dates back to 4000-5000 B.C. in Mesopotamia (modern day Iraq).

The next class Ms. Held demonstrated the basics of how to make a cylinder (mug) on the pottery wheel.
(video to come)

Students have been hard at work learning how to "center" their clay on the pottery wheel (get their clay to spin without a wobble) and then how to make a basic cylinder (mug). Our classroom is messy, messy, messy, but the students are making progress as they learn to master a very challenging skill set.
