UNIT 4: DREAM VESSELS

UNIT 4: DREAM VESSELS

*UNIT GOAL: We all have dreams, both conscious (day dreams) and unconscious; it is part of what makes us human. For the Dream Vessel project students will create a dream-inspired ceramic vessel (it may be sculptural, functional or both). Students will be introduced to Oneirology, the study of dreams. They will explore the components of the human mind (conscious, subconscious, and unconscious), the dream theories of Dr. Sigmund Freud and Dr. Carl Jung, as well as discuss and analyze their own dream experiences. Students will also be introduced to the Surrealist Art Movement, in order to understand how artists have used the unconscious mind to inspire visual art. Students will view and analyze surrealistic ceramic vessels from a variety of contemporary artists, as well as previous student projects. Students may choose from several hand-building techniques or the pottery wheel to create their Dream Vessel. Students will then be asked to carve, sculpt and paint dream-inspired imagery into/onto the interior and exterior surfaces of their clay vessels. Students will use a variety of clay glazes and/or acrylic paints for their finish.
