UNIT: IDENTITY TILES
*PROJECT GOAL: Inspired by icons from different cultures and time periods around the world, students will design their own personal symbol to be incorporated into clay identity tile. Students will learn to prepare clay, make basic slabs, and explore with a variety of ceramic tools & surface techniques to add color, texture, dimension, and pattern to their tiles. Students will be introduced to: relief, carving, stamping, sculpting, and drawing/painting on the clay’s surface with underglaze paint, colored slip and/or ceramic glazes. Students will also explore proportion, overlapping, repetition, and cropping to create a unified composition within each tile. This project will lay the foundation of basic skills necessary to create more complex clay forms throughout the rest of the school year.
